How To Choose The Right Polish For Your Piano

First and foremost, you should know the type of finish your piano has before you choose a polish to work with. While pianos of all types can be finished in several different ways, the final result always can be classified as either sealed or not sealed. This is a little ambiguous, and another way to think of it might be top coated or not top coated. Pianos that are finished using Boiled Linseed Oil, Danish Oil, Tung Oil, or Antique Oil are usually considered to be "Not Top Coated." The oil treatments do seal the pores of the wood against moisture penetration, but the oil itself soaks in and is absorbed and does not build up on the surface of the wood. Your fine wood grain is always right there and it is usually a Soft Satin finish. Furniture finished with oil is often referred to as FINE FURNITURE, although the term "FINE" has nothing at all to do with the quality or the retail value of the piano. Pianos that have the surface of the wood finished with lacquer, varnish, shellac, polyester, urethane or paint are considered as TOP COATED or SEALED. You must choose the right polish for the right finish. Two basic rules apply:

1. Never use any type of oil-based polish, such as Lemon Oil, on any SEALED wood surface. The oil will not penetrate the sealer and you will simply be smearing oil all over your piano. Worse, if you do not remove it ALL by vigorous wiping, it will dry and harden, leaving your original finish a basic mess.

2. Never use any type of cream polish on any oil finished wood surface. The cream polish will embed itself between the fine spaces of the wood grain and make polishing very difficult. There will always be wet cream polish hiding deep in the grain. The more you wipe, the more it smears.
